about

Leonora Duarte (1610-1678) was a Flemish composer and musician, member of a prominent Portuguese-Jewish merchant family who were great patrons of art and culture influential in prominent circles of artists, musicians, diplomats & various literati. In addition to composition, Duarte received instruction in viol, virginals, and lute. Her 7 Sinfonias hold the remarkable distinction as the earliest surviving 17th-century works for viol consort composed by a woman.
