about

2023 marks the 400th anniversary of the passing of Elizabethan composer William Byrd (ca.1540-1623). Influential composer of both vocal and instrumental music, Byrd's influence would be felt well beyond that of the British Isles. In addition to his exquisite sacred & secular vocal music, as well as his works for virginal and organ, his 3 and 4-part consort music for viols exhibit a masterful control of counterpoint, abundant with stylistic variety - from the melancholic to the ecstatic.
